Youth who live in social housing in London, Ontario learn early that poverty carries a lot of extra challenges; one is that it’s hard to trust people and agencies outside their community. London Community Chaplaincy has built a relationship of trust with the youth and their families that starts with providing safe, accessible, and accepting programs right where they live. Each youth who attends is provided with a one-on-one mentor who can connect them with resources and opportunities that they might not be able to access otherwise. The program continues all year round and includes employment opportunities. With this support, vulnerable young people can connect with positive opportunities in the larger community and grow their own vision of themselves as leaders.
